OUR “WHY” DRIVES US

Before “company purpose” was common, we identified our WHY – which is to create and provide a diversity of opportunities for all. Our WHY drives us to challenge the status quo and break down barriers. It guides our work and how we engage with our employees, clients, partners, and the community.
HIRING NOW

THE JOSTIN STORY

Albert C. Smitherman founded Jostin Construction in 1998 to create opportunities for others in an industry he loves. He continues to lead the way forward every day and has created a company where it is safe to discuss, debate, and learn. We have seasoned industry veterans, interns still learning the ropes, and a leadership team that includes women who started at Jostin with minimal construction experience (unique for our industry). We are stronger for the varied perspectives that come together to drive growth for individuals, the company, and the community.

Our employees have the opportunity to learn and grow, while helping build the region one project at a time.

WHAT’S NEW WITH JOSTIN?

Albert Smitherman Honored with Spirit of Construction Award
Each Fall, the Spirit of Construction Foundation hosts an event that celebrates the “noble industry” and honors a number of individuals, including scholarship winners, posthumous honorees, and Lifetime Career Achievement Honorees.
This year, Albert Smitherman (Founder and CEO of Jostin) was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes individuals for their lifetime contributions to the construction industry and to the civic, aesthetic, and economic wellbeing of the Greater Cincinnati Region.
“The greatest thing about this career is helping change peoples’ lives, including Liza’s and my own. In our career, to be able to understand what we have been blessed with, to be able to work for ourselves, come to work every single day and know that we’re working for ourselves with a great group of people, it’s just been wonderful.”
– Albert C. Smitherman, CEO at Jostin Construction
Congratulations and #MuchLove to our CEO, Albert C. Smitherman for well-earned recognition of the legacy you are building and leading every day.

MEET OUR TEAM

Justin Smitherman

Field Operations Manager

Justin Smitherman has been with Jostin from the beginning. He worked as a laborer in high school in the Concrete division and interviewed for a project manager position out of college. Five years later, he is the Field Operations Manager for the Concrete division. Justin is an entrepreneur at heart – it runs in the family – and has plans to grow into an executive role over time. Justin is on the board for ACI (American Concrete Institute).

David Crystal

General Manager - GC

David Crystal is the General Manager for the General Contracting division. He has been with Jostin since 2019. However, he has been in construction since the age of 16, working alongside his dad, a residential contractor. Dave’s passion is growing people in the trades. He is also known for bringing fun and treats to jobsites. Last holiday season, he visited Jostin crews wearing a giant Rudolph the Reindeer head. Dave is on the board for AGC (Associated General Contractors of America).

Mike Mattis

VP, Estimating

Mike Mattis started at Jostin in 2002 as a co-op student from Cincinnati State. He now leads the estimating department at Jostin, across both divisions. He is passionate about growing the capabilities of his team and works in lock-step with the operations team and clients to arrive at the most efficient pricing and scope for projects.

Michael is the current Board President for the American Subcontractors Association of Ohio. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Spirit of Construction Foundation and a member of the ASPE.

He volunteers for People Working Cooperatively Repair Affair, National Kidney Foundation, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Walks for Kids, and coaches local baseball, basketball, and soccer teams.

Whitney Eckert

Chief Operating Officer

Whitney has been with Jostin since 2001. She has led the accounting department for her entire tenure, while also managing key client relationships. She recently became the Chief Operating Officer for Jostin to continue driving growth across both the General Contracting and Concrete divisions. Whitney’s well-known superpower is her investigative skills, which are invaluable in continuing to uncover new ways to do our work better, smarter, and more efficiently. Whitney is on the board of trustees for Stepping Stones and ACI (Allied Construction Industries) and just recently joined the board for the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce.

Liza D. Smitherman

Chief People Officer

Liza helped found Jostin in 1998. An educator originally, she has always been the driver behind how Jostin intentionally grows individuals and their skills sets. Liza led the work to articulate Jostin’s WHY – to create & provide a diversity of opportunities for all. As Chief People Officer, she oversees all aspects of how Jostin supports and grows employees to help them reach their full potential. She is a long-time member of the board of trustees for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, is on Cincinnati Children’s Hospital executive committee, and is also a member of the executive committee for REDI. Her favorite people in the world are her two grandsons.

Mike Vieth

General Manager - Concrete

Mike Vieth is a seasoned veteran in the industry. He started as a co-op at Jostin in 2000 and he’s never looked back. He oversees operations of the Concrete division and has helped establish Jostin’s site work capability. Mike is 6′ 7″ – and is hard to miss on jobsites – yes, he did play basketball (at NKU). Mike serves on the advisory committee for CityLink’s Cornerstone Construction Training program.

Albert C. Smitherman

Chief Executive Officer

Albert founded Jostin in 1998 with a passion for construction and a commitment to creating opportunities for others by breaking down barriers. While his day-to-day responsibilities are spent in board rooms and conference rooms, his favorite “office” is still a metal deck pour at 3AM while using a double trowel as his office chair. Albert is a member of CRBC and is on the board of trustees for The Christ Hospital Foundation and Bethany House.
